Are you planning to set up an e-commerce business? Great idea right there. If the current trend is anything to go by, there is nothing better than starting a home business. But, planning will only take you so far. You need to start working on it.

The first step is, setting up an e-commerce website.

Here are some tips to consider while designing an e-commerce website:

Choose your platform: There are plenty of website platforms to set up a website. Choose one that best fits your requirements. There are free and paid options, the latter providing more features and customisability compared to the former.

Choose your domain name: Domain name is the web address to your e-commerce website; it should be unique so your potential buyers can easily find you. There are third-party registrars where you can register your domain name for a nominal fee.

Choose a theme: The general theme should be in sync with your products and target audience. The website platforms have a plethora of themes in their collection for you to choose from and customise according to your convenience. Choose a theme that is compatible with desktop, mobile and tablet.

Designing the website: As mentioned above, the design of the website should be in accordance with your product(s), but avoid going overboard with it. Minimise clutter, stay clear of overtly cursive fonts, avoid large chunks of written information and keep your homepage informative but clean and crisp. You could always check out leading e-commerce websites or platforms to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t.

Showcase your products: There are a few things you need to consider, listed as follows:

a) Try to avoid stock pictures but focus on good quality and professional photography of your products from angles possible to give the buyers a real look.

b) Give all possible information about the product. Lack of or incorrect information can be very degrading for your venture. Since the buyers cannot touch the items, they will seek for every information possible and verify when they receive the package. So correct and detailed product descriptions are important. Information includes - price, colour, colour varieties/options, measurements, materials, etc.

d) Highlight the out-of-stock items or keep the option of excluding the out-of-stock product from the search results.

Include search function: For every online seller portal or website, the presence of a text search option is a mandate. It should be user-friendly with result suggestions after the user has typed the first few characters so he/she gets to type less. There should be a proper filter and sorting option for more user convenience.

Design the shopping Cart: All product pages must have “Add to Cart” button distinctly highlighted and also give an indication that the product has been added to the cart. The 'Shopping Cart' page or the 'Checkout' page should be informative. It should include the product information that has been added, the price, taxes, fees and the total amount should be clearly mentioned. Related products or products that other customers buy with the said selected product should also be highlighted. At the end of the page, there should be a 'Continue Shopping' option. Try to keep a simple, single checkout page.

Add payment gateway systems: It is ideal to offer a wide range of payment options for user convenience. In India Cash on Delivery (COD) is highly preferred.

Add guest checkout option: First timers most often prefer a guest checkout rather than signing up. Once you have won their trust they will most probably sign up.

Acquire SSL certificate: Getting an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate assures safe online transactions and data storage, secured from hackers.

Provide all information about your company: Ideally, there should be an 'About Us' page with your mission and vision.

Add FAQ page and Policies page: It is ideal to let your buyers know about everything, about Shipping, Returns, Exchange and Refund policies.

Add contact support facilities: Since-commerce is a 24x7 business, customers would want to reach to support anytime; you should have contact forms, live chats, and service helplines for improving the customers’ experience with your venture.

Seems intimidating, right? Well, it is expensive too. Hiring web designers and all.
